huawei 220 usb modem

My new computer video card is dead so I graciously unpacked my old Dell latitude, those where the times when Dell was committed to doing long lasting machines and not just pretty looking ones ;)

And then I’ve fighting over two hours to set up my Pepephone HSDPA USB modem until I found this. So I’ve though that I will post this to avoid other people with old configurations or versions of Ubuntu to loose so many hours…This works like a champ :

  1. To install, just download pepephone-usb.tar.gz and do:
    sudo tar -xvzf pepephone-usb.tar.gz   -C /

    And then plug the modem (Probed that you read details below). It should work automatically. If it doesn’t just run wvdial from a terminal line to see log messages.

Just as a comment I updated original Ricardo’s tgz with Pepephone connect details and left /etc/wvdial.conf commented in case you need to switch to Vodafone:

#Original Ricardo Init, Works faster with mine I think
#Init2 = ATE0V1&D2&C1S0=0+IFC=2,2
#Update address below with “ac.vodafone.es” if you are with Vodafone

Init3 = AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”gprs.pepephone.com”

Haave a happy connection :)

UPDATE:
Some people contacted me about the PIN fact. I’ve read that this modem has some issues with the PIN and can be buggy…So make it simple: Plug the SIM in your mobile and REMOVE the PIN.
If you thing PIN is a high secure thing you are simply wrong. There is no such a risk considering that in case of loosing the Alfajor making one call to your provider the SIM card is disabled and no one will be able to connect.
